It’s hard to believe one week ago I was in Cuba, living my best life. I had THE best time! I am still holding onto my vacation glow, in fact it’s the only thing that’s kept me going all week! Cuba was a beautiful experience for me, made great not only by my travel companions Ivory & Georgette, but by the beauty of Cuba and it’s people.
We arrived Thursday to our Airbnb in Miramar, a beautiful quiet neighborhood in the suburbs of Havana. We had a 3 bedroom, 3 bath home with a front and back terrace, complete with air conditioning! When I travel, I want to be cute but comfy, and this was especially true for this trip– I wanted to arrive in living color in Cuba! I decided on this hareem maxi I purchased from ASOS. It’s incredibly comfortable, and the vibrant yellow reminds me of sunshine!
After settling into our Airbnb, we changed for dinner and were treated to our first right in a classic car! More on Havana nights coming soon!
After a delicious breakfast made by the attendant of the house, we decided to head into central Havana to check out some museums. It was hot and humid. I definitely prefer the heat to cold, but I knew it was going to be a sticky day! After catching a cab and driving down the Malecon, a walk/roadway along the sea, we were dropped off at the museo de la revolucion, a museum dedicated to the history of revolution in Cuba. The building itself is an important part of revolutionary history; after the revolution it housed both the Government and the Council of Ministers and in 1965, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba was formed at the still Presidential Palace. The history here is amazing. The architecture of this building was fascinating enough, but the artifacts, art and stories held within were even more amazing.
A few months ago, my girlfriend and I stumbled upon a shop not far from my house called Hands on Drums, a store that sold Ghanian clothing art and jewelry. I kind of wanted all the things, but contained myself and picked up this jumpsuit which can also be worn as pants. I can’t wait to go back, this store has so many beautiful things! If you live in the D.C. area you should definitely stop by! If not, I’ve found a similar option below!
We signed up to do a tour of old Havana. I’m going to admit, my motivation for this particular tour was based on the beautiful boy who owned the tour company (#iaintsorry💁🏾), but I was also excited to get a guided experience from someone who was from Cuba and could give me insight I would not have gotten on my own.
We were picked up in a GORGEOUS pink classic Chevy and driven around the burbs of Miramar and Vedado, another upscale neighborhood. We even drove through a forest in the middle of Havana! We also stopped in plaza de la revolucion, This place was the site for many political rallies, as well as a place where people would gather to hear Fidel Castro speak.
Afterwards we took a long tour by foot through the streets of old Havana. There was such a vibrancy happening here! It was a beautiful day and the streets were lined with people and music. It reminded me very much of the streets of Florence. Here were many of the beautifully colored buildings you see in photographs of Cuba. It probably doesn’t surprise you, but I’ve had visions of what my looks were going to be for this trip for some time. And I just happened to find just what I’m looking for. Torrid sent us each a piece for our trip, and I chose this jersey maxi in a vibrant coral color. I love anything with a high slit, and this skirt was perfect! I paired it with a ruffle crop top in fuchsia that I purchased from indie designer Christian Omeshun. THIS TOP IS EVERYTHING! It’s so well made and I’m not sure the photos do it justice! I am so happy with this purchase! Needless to say, I was feeling like the dancing girl emoji in this look! 💃🏾
The day I had been looking forward to the whole trip— the beach! Ivory was surprised that a trip to the beach was on the top of my list for visiting Cuba, but I could live my life (and did, and should be!) by the beach!
We drove about 35 minutes outside of Havana to Playa de Santa Maria. It was another unbelievably beautiful day, and the beach was packed! We secured three beach chairs and a couple of umbrellas and proceeded to roast all day in the Caribbean sun.
Eloquii also sent us a couple of pieces and for my selection, I chose their new swim pieces. Ladies! This was such an exciting moment for Eloquii! They remain one of my top brands, not just because they continue to stay on top of trends, but because they are so good about customer relations– the swim collection being a testament to that after so many people asked. I loved each piece the collection and chose as my first piece this red and navy two piece. I did an Instastories a few weeks ago on sizing but obviously that only lasted 24 hours so here it goes. As the site mention, the pieces run small. I sized up in both top and bottom as suggested. The top in the larger size fit perfectly. The top has underwire which is perfect for ample ladies such as myself! I left the straps behind but it does come with them if you need them. As for the bottom, I sized up twice. Reason being that it didn’t offer enough coverage in the back for some of my back flub. The bottoms also features rouching which is super flattering!
Guys, I am missing Cuba so so much right now. It was the vacation that I needed, but also there was something so special about the country that I can’t quite explain. All I know is that I hope to return and soon.
Stay tuned for part two of my travel diaries, Havana Nights, coming soon!
